'An innocent boy like me should not be raised in an atmosphere like this. '
“Do something. Yes,” Lorelai agreed faintly. She hadn’t seen Jess in years, and she wasn’t even sure Luke had heard from him since he skipped town. There was no doubt in her mind that Luke was probably just as shocked as she and Rory. She stood up much too quickly and nearly knocked her coffee off the table, but quick reflexes caught the mug as it teetered on the edge. She pushed it back firmly with a sheepish smile.
As subtly as possible for Lorelai Gilmore, she motioned for Rory to follow her lead as she eased towards the counter. She came up behind Jess and joined him at the counter, flashing a smile to Luke as she did.
“Jess! You’re in town!” Genuine shock filled her voice. “What are you doing here?”
It wasn’t meant to be rude, but she realized all too late the harsh tone in her voice. She gave an apologetic smile.
She knew Jess had loved her daughter from day one, but she didn’t think he still harbored feelings for her. He couldn’t possibly! After all this time? Rory had moved on… found Logan. Did he really expect her to be waiting for his return? A million scenarios flashed through her mind, all less plausible than the previous.
So she paced herself. She counted backwards from ten in her head, calmed her speeding heart rate.
He had broken Rory’s heart too many times for her liking. He had been nothing but a nuisance in his years in Stars Hollow, and this did nothing to benefit his standings with Lorelai. But she would be patient; she would wait for an answer.
Then she would pounce.
He was just about to open his mouth and let another word directed towards Luke slip, when Lorelai Gilmores sudden appearance made him jump. His gaze moved from Lorelai to Rory, then back.
“Lorelai,” he said slowly and with a quick glance at Rory he added “Rory.”
When she had asked her mother to do something, this hadn’t exactly been the ‘something’ Rory had meant. Her mother and Jess had never really gotten along, right from the beginning there was issue after issue and then the way her’s and Jess’ relationship panned out hadn’t been exactly ideal for any mother. Watching Lorelai stand up Rory went wide eyed trying to motion for Lorelai to sit back down but there was no stopping her mother once she got an idea in her head. Standing up feeling as if she had no other choice she followed her way over to where Jess was standing and waited for the awkwardness to unfold.
The harshness in her mother’s voice was to be expected and Rory let out a small breath, at least momentarily comforted by Lorelai’s apologetic smile. But the shock was shared by her daughter, she never once thought that Jess would find his way back to Stars Hollow. He and the town just seemed to not exactly get along. He’d show up, leave, show up and leave all over again. It was a vicious cycle. And he was doing so well for himself in Philadelphia, was this just a visit back to see Luke? The thoughts were running through her head so fast the brunette hardly noticed Jess turning around to acknowledge the two Gilmore girls standing behind him.
“Hey Jess,” she offered, missing a beat and wincing slightly at the awkwardness of it all. “It’s good to see you, in Stars Hollow. Is Philadelphia going okay? And your book?” Oh God. Clamping her mouth shut she shot her mother a small look. Someone needed to shove a sock in her mouth and stat to get her to stop rambling.
Looking at Rory, Jess could see how much she had changed since he last saw her. She looked more mature, more grown up.
Still, while she talked, he figured there was still the “old” Rory standing in front of him. The one he got to know a few years back, when he first came to Stars Hollow. The one he slowly fell in love with, and then left back here.
No matter what Lorelai thought, he did love Rory, and he was sorry for leaving like that. Twice.
“Philadelphia is great,” he gave Lorelai a quick glance, knowing she wasn’t pleased to see him, not at all. “And the books going okay, too,” he nodded slowly, now looking at Rory again.

Watching her mother interact with Luke brought a smile to Rory’s face even if it was across the room. Sometimes people were just meant to be together, it had been something Rory had brought up on their big Valentine’s Day weekend trip to Martha’s Vineyard. Maybe Luke and Logan would be the ones. Right now it seemed like it was going to go in that direction. Although her mother had yet to bring her up to date about most of her relationship with Luke, Rory was getting a small feeling it was more serious than she was letting on. Maybe she’d let her in the loop soon.
Eyebrows shot up into the air at Lorelai’s excuse but she didn’t question it. Not in the busy atmosphere of the Diner. The second undertones of a serious conversation started to waft through the air it was like millions of ears were suddenly focused in on that moment. And subsequently the news you had been talking about would be broadcasted over Stars Hollow in a matter of moments. So instead a small look was shot across the table, Rory informing her mother that while she may not want to talk now eventually she was going to have to spill. She didn’t want Lorelai overworking herself or something, she had worked too hard to get to this point just to burn herself out.
But she was completely distracted by the appearance of Jess Mariano. She had thought that she’d most likely never see him again after she left that day in Philadelphia, or at least not for years. And now he and Logan were in the same small town…The memory of their last encounter caused her to chew on the inside of her cheek before finally looking away and back to Lorelai. She was floored…shocked, and she really didn’t know what to do. Saying hi would be completely acceptable, but he was busy dealing with Luke and…God, now she desperately needed coffee…Or maybe even a taco. “Um, yeah…Looks like it.” She mumbled. She needed to think or something to talk about so she wasn’t just sitting there staring like a goldfish. “We should do something.”
“Do something. Yes,” Lorelai agreed faintly. She hadn’t seen Jess in years, and she wasn’t even sure Luke had heard from him since he skipped town. There was no doubt in her mind that Luke was probably just as shocked as she and Rory. Rory Gilmore loved being home. There was never really a dull moment in the small down, and its citizens made sure of it. Finn had made a trip out to Stars Hollow which was a hilarious mental image and and even funnier realistic one. She made a note to show the eccentric Australian around at some point but it looked as if he had some very important things to discuss with his best friend. About what Rory couldn’t be sure, but she had heard the word ‘redhead’ mumbled at one point which only made her shake her head and duck out of the situation quickly. It was nothing she really wanted to intrude on and it was such a nice day. With that thought in mind she hit to the street, walking a bit aimlessly through town looking around and remembering.
The book store had, of course, been her first and really only stop. Once she got there Rory couldn’t help but get immersed in new books and old favorites, her fingers lightly dragging across the backs of books as she walked past. There were a lot of memories here as well, a recent one of Lane and her seated each researching. Lane of course about her pregnancy and Rory about how to send a text message to get some of the intimacy back and her’s and Logan’s relationship while he was in London. A small laugh fell from her at the memory before she lost herself in the world of Hemingway and Fitzgerald.
Hearing from her mother was a welcomed distraction. And when was she ever not up for Luke’s coffee? After getting up off the floor and putting the book back in its rightful place Rory grabbed her things and was out the door to make the short trip to Luke’s diner. Waving at the busy diner owner as she walked in she quickly took her and her mother’s usual table realizing that it was empty and waited.
“I’m sorry, do I know you?” Was the quick response before Rory laughed. “Nothing much really, I only got here a few minutes before you.” Another glance was taken towards the busy albeit small staff of Luke’s knowing her mother would be quite verbal about the lack of coffee in her hands soon enough. “Was work bad?” Rory knew her mom, and she also knew that Lorelai tended to overwork herself. Hopefully she would take a break and allow herself to relax. The ringing of the bell signaled a new customer and Rory caught a familiar glimpse in the corner of her eye before she turned to look. Jess? Jess Mariano was back in Stars Hollow? She hadn’t seen him since the trip out to Philadelphia…Looking back to her mother quickly, feeling oddly again once like a fish without water she waited to see what her Mom thought about the situation.
Lorelai’s eyes scanned the diner. She offered a smile to Luke and winked when he smiled back. He rolled his eyes and walked into the kitchen, leaving Lorelai to stifle a small laugh. Luke’s awkwardness for public displays of affection had proven to be a great source of amusement, and she took advantage of this fact whenever she had the opportunity.
“Lucas, coffee!” she cried dramatically.
Her attention returned to her daughter, and she shrugged. “Work was fine. I just needed a break, that’s all. Michel has it handled. I’ll probably stop by Sookie’s later and take Davey and Martha off her hands. They probably aren’t helping her cold at all, the poor thing.”
She had left out a lot in her sorry excuse of an explanation. Like how she hadn’t slept in a few days despite her desperate attempts to do so; like how she hadn’t had any quality time with Luke in five days because she had been splitting her time between the inn, Sookie, and Paul Anka… Lorelai Gilmore: Queen of Avoiding a Proper Answer since 1968. She wanted to tell her daughter these things, but the diner wasn’t exactly the best place to do so, so she vowed to tell her another time.
“How about you? Smell a lot of good books?” But even as she asked this, she could tell Rory wasn’t fully focused on her. She wasn’t even sure if she had heard. Her eyes had darted quickly over Lorelai’s shoulder and away again, and Lorelai blinked in confusion. Whoever had just walked in had clearly put her daughter off her axle, and this was the last thing she needed. She turned to see who had walked in and gaped in surprise at the sight of Jess Mariano.
Jess Mariano was back in Stars Hollow? Since when? For how long? She wanted to say something to him—ask him why he was back in town—but she knew she’d find out sooner or later. She looked at her daughter.
“So… looks like Jess is back.”
It took him quite some time to decide on heading back to Stars Hollow in the first place. Thinking back though, he remembered having that urge to visit his uncle again, who - even though Jess would never admit - did help him out a lot, a couple of years ago, when he first came into town.
Luke was not behind the counter when Jess got there, and so, after casually scanning the room without paying further attention to Lorelai and Rory, he sat at the counter and ordered a coke.
About a minute passed, until Luke came out of the kitchen - probably to check something - and spotted Jess. For a second, Luke seemed to think he was hallucinating, then he stepped over to him.
“Jess,” was all he said, and he sounded as surprised as he looked.
“Hi, Luke.” Jess didn’t really know what else to say and he got the weird feeling, that he shouldn’t have come at all. He didn’t even know what to say. And with Rory being right behind him.. - that did not help that much.

Lorelai Gilmore’s long day at work ended precisely at six every Monday through Friday. After working at the inn—or even the Independence—one would think she’d be used to the work hours. But Lorelai was exhausted. Perhaps it was the lack of sleep due to the previous night’s occurrences (Paul Anka had decided to add his own personal flair to the rug in the kitchen, complete with chicken bits and bile). Perhaps it was because she overworked herself day after day, what with Sookie being on temporary leave. Or perhaps she just needed a coffee run.
She abandoned her office and ventured into the Dragonfly’s lobby where Michel was dutifully at his post. She walked up to him with a small smile.
“Michel, I’m leaving for the day,” she said simply.
“Oh yes,” Michel responded in his thick, French accent, “you go home and I will stay another hour—”
“Great, thanks,” she smiled tiredly.
“—even though I have been doing the most work today. The Charlestons are like Taylor Doose on a sugar high. But no, you go home.”
His sarcasm was not lost on her as he continued his tirade, but Lorelai brushed it away as if she hadn’t noticed. “See you tomorrow, Michel.”
She left before he could get another word in, and she was positive he was fuming as she shut the door behind her.
The afternoon breeze lifted her spirits, and Lorelai set off towards the diner with a contented smile. She hadn’t been by the diner with her daughter in what felt like ages (though it had only really been hours). There was only so long Lorelai could go without Luke’s coffee; any time over 24 hours was too long.
For a moment, Lorelai considered driving to Luke’s, but the sun’s warmth convinced her to hoof it. So off she went.
She reached the diner in record time and pulled open the door. The bell jingled, signaling her arrival. Her daughter had already staked out a table, and she slid into the chair across from her.
“What’s up, stranger?”
Jess stopped right across from the diner, not sure wether to just walk in or not. He could see Lorelai and Rory through the window and he wasn’t sure if that really was the right time to walk in there.
He had not talked to Rory since the day she visited him in Philadelphia. He thought for a moment, then slowly made his way across the street and towards the diner.
It took him a great amount of confidence to open that door and step inside. With the bell telling everyone he entered, he wasn’t sure wether Rory and Lorelai had seen him yet but he didn’t want to look over to check.
Quickly he stepped up to the counter.

As the bus drove into town, Jess actually wondered if he should just stay on the bus and pretend he didn’t really wanna come here. But now, that would mean he was a coward. So he got his stuff together, put his book back in his backpack and got off the bus.
Looking around, he realized, that Stars Hollow hadn’t really changed much. Slowly he began walking towards Luke’s Diner, where he knew his uncle would most likely be.
